A MODERNIZED GREEK TRAGEDY

Coup de chance, which premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2023, is master director Woody Allen‘s 50th film and the master director’s first film whose native language is not English, and is entirely French after Midnight in Paris (2011). It is his second film shot in. Cinematography of the movie; Apocalypse Now, Last Tango in Paris, 1900 and The Last Emperor It is created by Oscar-winning Italian artist Vittorio Storaro, who is known as one of the best and most influential cinematographers in the history of cinema with his work in classic films such as. We are faced with a new one of Woody Allen’s philosophically deep films in which neurotic characters experience conflicts. Master filmmaker known for his comedy films in the bittersweet genre; He leaves us with elements of drama and tension in this new film, where existential themes dominate. Throughout the story, we dive into the inner worlds of fragile characters dominated by character conflicts.

INFLUENCE OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE

When we look at the director’s cinema narrative, we see once again the effects of the French New Wave Movement (La Nouvelle Vague) and Italian Neorealism Cinema (Neorealismo), which dominate Woody Allen’s cinema, accompanied by a fascinating atmosphere. The origin of the story is inspired by the legend of Cephalos and Procris in Ancient Greek Mythology. In addition, we see that the finale of the film is a reference to the painting The Death of Procris by the Italian Renaissance painter Piero di Cosimo, famous for the mythological and allegorical subjects he painted at the end of the Quattrocento Period. This artwork is inspired by Publius Ovidius Naso‘s tale of the death of Procris at the hands of her husband Cephalus, in Metamorphoses VII.

-In the early stages of production, director of photography Vittorio Storaro stated in an interview: “I would not compare it to Match Point (2005).
