5 OSCAR-NOMINATED FILM
Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomie d’une chute), the 2023 French legal drama thriller directed by French filmmaker Justine Triet, is one of the strongest productions of the awards season. The film won the Palme d’Or and the Palm Dog Award at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and received 11 nominations at the 49th César Awards. The film, which received 5 Oscar nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, exceeded 1 million viewers in France a month after its theatrical release and received great acclaim from the audience. Director Justine Triet’s fourth feature film, co-written with Arthur Harari, tells the story of a woman trying to prove her innocence in the death of her husband. In this Hitchcockian psychological thriller; The search for the truth (just like in the classic movie 12 Angry Men) oscillates between innocence and the criminal profile. In addition, we see that the issue of sexism has an important place in the film. We see that while all male witnesses (first blood expert, psychiatrist, gendarmerie/police) support the prosecution, all female witnesses (student, second blood expert) support the defense. Another important detail is the character of the blind young boy Daniel, who stands out as a symbol of justice in the movie (like the statue of Themis). The meaning of Daniel, a word of Hebrew origin, means God is my judge.
Stars; Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner, Antoine Reinartz, Samuel Theis, Jehnny Beth, Saadia Bentaïeb, Camille Rutherford, Anne Rotger and Sophie Fillières.
BEHIND THE SCENES
-The actor for Daniel, the son, was very hard to find. They looked for him for four months and came up with nothing, so they had to look again for three more months until they found Milo Machado-Graner. He then went into intensive piano lessons to get ready for the shooting.
-The ball bouncing down the stairs at the beginning of the film was difficult to get right. They needed the ball not to bounce too fast and roll out of frame, so they dipped it in a dog-friendly glue to slow the ball down.
-Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. It is the third film directed by a woman to be given the award, alongside Julia Ducournau’s Titane (2021) and Jane Campion’s Piyano (1993).
-The director did not tell Sandra Hüller whether her character was innocent or guilty. Rather, she told Hüller to act as if she was innocent.
