English Premier League club Liverpool defeated Leicester 2-1 on Saturday evening, marking their eighth win in a row to start the season.
The 95th minute penalty goal by James Milner assured the eight straight victory for The Reds, they are now only three victories behind to match Tottenham’s 11-win streak in the 1960/61 campaign to start the season.
Liverpool, which missed the Premier League title by one point last season, became the team with the most points ever (97) in five major European leagues who finished the season in the second place.
Losing the league title to Manchester City last season, Liverpool made a perfect start for the current season, winning all their eight matches.
Despite not winning the league title since the 1989/1990 season, Liverpool are the current UEFA Champions League title holders.
Currently, Liverpool scored 20 goals in the Premier League, with strong forwards like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, while they only allowed six goals with solid defence players like Virgil Van Dijk and a successful goalkeeper in Alisson Becker.
The Premier League record holder with the longest winning streak to start a season is Tottenham Hotspur with 11 wins in the 1960/61 season.
The Hotspurs from London finished the same season with championship after 42 match weeks. They did not lose a single point until drawing against Manchester City in the 12th week.
Paris Saint-Germain, European league record holder
Liverpool’s current performance immediately put the team among the best starts in five major European leagues, but they have a long way to go to break the overall record.
Because, France’s Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are the team that have the most victories in a row to start the season with 14 matches.
The PSG managed to win 14 straight matches last season (2018/19), breaking the record that once belonged to Olympique Lillois, which started the 1936/1937 season winning eight matches in a row.
The PSG, managed by Thomas Tuchel since July 2018, also broke the record of Tottenham, winning 14 matches consecutively.
Meanwhile, Fenerbahce is the Turkish league record holder in this field, starting the 2009/2010 season with eight straight victories.
Here are the five best season starts in five major European leagues:
Team | League | Country | Season | Win streak |
PSG | Ligue 1 | France | 2018-19 | 14 wins |
Tottenham | Premier League | England | 1960-61 | 11 wins |
Roma | Serie A | Italy | 2013-14 | 10 wins |
Bayern Munich | Bundesliga | Germany | 2015-16 | 10 wins |
Real Madrid | La Liga | Spain | 1968-69 | 9 wins |
